I recently heard someone say: „Self forgiveness is the most important practice. It is the only practice.“
„Yes“, I thought, „self forgiveness is the most profound blessing we can offer ourselves and the world.“ Being capable (again) of blessing our Being is the result of one of the most important recognitions on the spiritual path: the recognition that WE ourselves are the only means to Oneness we will ever possess.
Once you realize that You are the Only Thing You’ve Got, you’ll start to give it all you’ve got. You begin to understand that you can not experience the deep connection with existence that you long for if you take yourself out of the equation.
So instead of annihilating the problematic You, you may start considering some other ways to deal with the twisted, edgy, angry You. You will turn to those more gentle, soothing and holistic ways of self care that probably seemed too meek when you still believed in „bettering yourself through battering yourself“. You will notice a growing interest in the many possibilities of blessing yourself and gradually lose your appetite for aggressing yourself.
A SIMPLE EXERCISE
To begin, I want to offer an idea of self-forgiveness that is taken from the Course in Miracles. The concept is really simple and the effect is profound: whenever you notice your mind wandering off into those well-known, dark and desperate realms, simply state with conviction: „I forgive myself for this thought.“
Most painful experiences are the result of believing a painful thought about your worth, your place, your meaning in this world. Start by forgiving yourself for your thoughts. Then, forgive yourself for believing what you think. This process will make you highly attractive for true insight and change.
Once you are ready to forgive yourself, you invite a paradigm shift that will free you from the belief in punishment and unworthiness. From this higher plane you will be able to see why you had to believe what you believed and had to do what you did. Understanding the reasons for your suffering will soften your heart even more.
The beauty of forgiveness is that it requires so little (willingness) and yields so much (understanding, compassion, lightness).
May we all cultivate the compassion and self love that will guide us from darkness to light.

LOVE AFTER LOVE
The time will come, when with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
